Fasts for Muharram PDF Print E-mail

A reminder to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram which fall on Saturday December 26th and Sunday December 27th, 2009! The MSA will not be hosting an iftaar on campus on Yawm al-'Ashura (Day of Ashura); however it is highly encouraged to fast on this day so wherever you are that day, try to fast insha'Allah!

It is recommended to fast both the tenth and the ninth of Muharram since Allah's Messenger fasted the tenth and intended to fast the ninth.

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora and told the people to fast, they said, “O Messenger of Allaah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "Next year, if Allaah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had passed away. [Narrated by Muslim, 1916]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” [Narrated by Muslim, 1162]

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day, the day of ‘Ashoora’, and this month – meaning Ramadaan.
[Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1867]

The people asked, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?" He said, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing." Summer Iftars PDF Print E-mail

Assalam alaikum

A big change that Iftaar Services has had to look into this year is starting iftaars BEFORE classes officially start. Alhamdulillah we have sponsors willing to provide iftaars starting from August 24th. Since this is the first time in many, many years that Ramadan has started well before classes start in September, we don't have an accurate idea of how many people to expect. In order to avoid wasting food or not having enough food, if you are planning on being on campus for iftaar ANY day between August 24th to September 9, PLEASE click on the link below and either write your name or initials under the date you will be at iftaar. While this is by no means 100% accurate, it will be very helpful in providing a rough estimate. Jazakullah khair to everyone who takes the time to do this. It will only take a minute and will insha'Allah prevent food from being wasted or people from going hungry.
